Dresden

Dresden was almost totally destroyed by bombs in 1945, and for 40 years the old cathedral and surrounding buildings lay in ruins. That changed with reunification in the 1990's, and the entire area was restored to its baroque grandeur. So today it looks old, but has important things like AC and indoor plumbing. Our intro to the city was at the Zwinger Museum, built in 1719 and rebuilt in the 1990's. It's kind of a mini Versailles, and served as the home for August the Strong's many concubines. August was an interesting leader, who single-handedly tried to keep local schools open by fathering more than 300 children. Talk about a baby daddy!
